Integrated Solar Applications (ISA) celebrates 50 years

SEON Member Integrated Solar Applications (ISA) Celebrates 50 Years of Sustainable Innovation

At the Sustainable Energy Outreach Network (SEON), we spend a lot of time talking about the future of energy, about sustainability, and about the vital work of our members in making those visions a reality. But sometimes, you just have to stop and celebrate. And today, we’re celebrating a monumental achievement from one of our own: Integrated Solar Applications (ISA), proudly marking its 50th anniversary.

Think about that for a moment: fifty years. While some still debate the merits of renewable energy, ISA has been on the ground in southern Vermont for five decades, building, innovating, and, frankly, leading. This isn’t just a business anniversary; it’s a testament to the enduring power of foresight and an unwavering commitment to a better way.

ISA’s story starts with a true pioneer, Alain Ratheau, who in 1975 founded Solar Applications Company. Alain wasn’t just building; he was anticipating. Solar thermal, battery storage, small wind, PV – these weren’t buzzwords back then; they were nascent technologies that Alain saw as the future. His vision laid the foundation. Then, in 2008, Andrew Cay, an engineer and entrepreneur, stepped in, and with Alain’s continued wisdom, they rebranded as Integrated Solar Applications. The focus became even sharper: combining technologies for true net-zero energy. This isn’t about slapping some panels on a roof; it’s about holistically rethinking how buildings interact with energy.

What makes ISA so remarkable, beyond their impressive longevity, is their team. Katrina Wilson, their Vice President, hits it squarely on the head: “Our dedicated and capable people with a great attitude and strong customer focus make the difference.” It’s not just about technical expertise – though they have that in spades, covering everything from solar PV to ground-source geothermal. It’s about a culture of excellence, a collective drive that has positioned them as the leading PV installer in their region. They’re not shying away from scale either, with projects like the 2.5 MW array near Brattleboro’s Exits 2 and 3, and a massive 5.7 MW array at the Brattleboro Landfill. These are not small feats; these are substantial, tangible steps towards a decentralized, sustainable energy future.

Andrew Cay understands the landscape intimately. He observes that “Integrated Solar has seen more advancement and change in the renewable energy industry in the last 15 years than the previous 35.” This rapid evolution, he notes, has led to broad market acceptance, with global projections reaching $2.5 trillion by 2032. His message is clear, and it’s one we echo at SEON: “The stability of government support is vital for continued growth; the technology is sound and the economics work. Our collective choices will determine our future. I have hope.” Hope, grounded in decades of practical application and demonstrable success.

Alain Ratheau’s perspective is equally vital. “In the early days, we focused on solar hot water and off-grid battery systems. Solar power gained attention in the 70s, stalled, then restarted in earnest in 2009. Lithium batteries began to migrate from power tools to EVs, and by 2016, when Tesla’s first lithium-ion battery Gigafactory was completed, the race for new battery technologies was on. Now these integrated technologies are rapidly advancing solar energy capacity.” This isn’t just history; it’s a living timeline of innovation that ISA has navigated, adapted to, and often driven.

As Executive Director of the Sustainable Energy Outreach Network, I can say with immense pride that Integrated Solar Applications truly exemplifies the spirit of a great organization in the sustainable energy sector. Their ability to continually adapt, to integrate new technologies, and to foster a team that is clearly committed to a shared vision for a sustainable future is exactly what Vermont needs. Their 50-year journey is not just a success story for them; it’s a beacon for the entire industry, demonstrating what can be achieved with grit, intelligence, and an unwavering belief in a better way.
