Building Science: Volume 2, Issue 10

In This Issue

From SEON’s Executive Director

It’s October… Happy Cabbage Day, Happy Halloween and Happy Building!

This has been a glorious Fall. We’re so blessed to live in this wonderful part of the country.

On October 23rd, from 4 to 5:30 PM, the Sustainable Energy Outreach Network

(SEON) hosted a crucial roundtable discussion titled “Passing the Torch: Vermont Builders Discuss Challenges Facing the Next Generation.” Set in the conference room of WW Building Supply in Newfane, this event was an enlightening and impactful gathering for anyone invested in the future of our building industry.

This was an opportunity to engage directly with seasoned general contractors—Jonathan Morse, Jonathan Klein, Stephen Mindel, Brian Ames, and Michael Wells—who shared their insights on the challenges currently facing the next generation of builders. As these industry veterans prepared to retire or transition, they carried invaluable knowledge about navigating an increasingly complex landscape of building codes, sustainability practices, and workforce shortages. Their experiences and advice were essential for anyone looking to thrive in today’s construction environment.

Certification Progress: The Office of Professional Regulation is still in the process of gathering the information they need to help advance the certification requirements for Energy Code, Building Science, and ICC Code. The Vermont Homebuilding Coalition continues to work together to collaborate with the OPR to define essential training and potential certification requirements for adhering to the state’s energy code. SEON’s courses on Basics of High-Performance Building and Water, Air, and Thermal Continuous Control Layers are under consideration for certification.

Future Programs: While still in the early stages, we are exploring the development of an apprenticeship program for High-Performance Builders.

Social Media: Stay tuned to our social media channels for more updates and promotions of our courses. Join us on FacebookInstagramTwitter / XTikTok, and LinkedIn.Onward and upward until next month!

How efficient is your home?

“Do you ever wonder how efficient your home is? Where is your home leaking energy – or money – from? Consider scheduling a virtual home energy visit!

We asked Matt Plouffe, an energy expert with Efficiency Vermont to tell us a little about virtual home energy visits. A virtual home energy visit is a room-by-room inspection of your home by an energy professional through a video chat, kind of like a Facetime call. These visits are a great first step before starting any home energy improvement project. The energy professional will work with you to create a road map to improve your home.”
