SEON’s Sustainable Energy Outreach Network Newsletter
In This Issue
From SEON’s Executive Director
Dear SEON Community,
As we embark on 2025, SEON remains dedicated to its mission of teaching sustainable building practices and workforce development. The past year has brought both successes and challenges, particularly concerning Vermont’s Net Zero goals.
The recent setbacks with the Clean Heat Standard have underscored the need for innovative approaches to decarbonization. While the Public Utility Commission’s proposed rules offer a path forward, the projected cost increases and political opposition necessitate a broader conversation. SEON recognizes the urgency of climate action and the need for solutions that are both effective and equitable.
Despite these hurdles, we are energized to explore alternative pathways to achieve our shared sustainability goals. We believe that through collaboration, education, and advocacy, we can create a more sustainable future for Vermont.
Here’s how SEON is stepping up:
- Expanding Workforce Development: We’re committed to training the next generation of skilled workers in sustainable building practices through initiatives like the TradesUp event and continued mentorship for New Americans. We are also working on a Registered Apprenticeship, more on that later.
- Strengthening Advocacy: SEON will actively engage with policymakers in Montpelier to advocate for policies that support decarbonization and workforce development in the building sector.
- Exploring Innovative Solutions: We’re dedicated to researching and promoting cost-effective and accessible technologies that can accelerate the transition to clean energy in Vermont’s homes and businesses.
We are confident that by working together, we can overcome these challenges and build a more resilient and sustainable Vermont. Thank you for your continued support of SEON’s mission.
Two more things! As you read the newsletter, you will see that we are offering discounts on our training and on the Better Building by Design. So no skimming!
Onward and upward,
Guy Payne
Executive Director

2025 Better Building by Design Conference
The 2025 conference theme is 2030 on the Horizon: Assessing Vermont’s Vision Versus Reality. Vermont has two ambitious goals with 2030 deadlines: make all new construction net-zero and reduce greenhouse gas pollution to 40% below 1990 levels.

If a total of 5 members from SEON contact Guy at guy@buildingscience.org to register:
- By March 19, the cost is $380
Our Members – In Action
We are excited to announce the addition of a new tool in our wood shop: a 21-bit line boring machine! This upgrade significantly enhances our capabilities, allowing us to bore 21 holes at a time—compared to the previous limit of just 7.
Light fixture mockups.
Two layers of the good stuff will give this Vermont home the protection it needs through all the seasons.
Woodstove installation complete!
As the temperatures drop and the weather snaps from chilly to bitter, many are familiar with the consequences: frozen pipes, drafty windows, and climbing costs for heating your house throughout the season.
Not for our Unity homes!
This is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT information for Vermont homeowners. Green Mountain Power is now focusing specifically on rebates for low-income residents. That rebate is no longer applied at the point of sale by Delta Energy Works. Take a look on our News and Education page for more information.
If you need a little extra help with some heat WW Building Supply has you covered! Stop by and see us today and let us help you stay a little warmer during this cold spell!!
Do you ever wonder how your compensation and benefits stack up against other companies in the industry?
You’re in luck – the 2024 results are in!
Thank you, Katie! And a heartfelt thank you to all our amazing customers who trust us with their insulation needs year after year.
Are you thinking of wearing your winter parka to bed? Consider better insulating your home. We have plenty of DIY videos and rebates to help guide you along. And if it is time to replace your home heating system, we have rebates for those, too.
Day 2 – on site at the jobsite! Medford High School’s Building Construction Program received some hands-on support today from Brett, one of our skilled product and installation managers, who ensured a seamless installation of our donated windows.
