What You’ll Learn: A Deep Dive into Building Science

Taught by instructor Junio Anthes-Moody, this comprehensive course is a key component of Vermont’s homebuilder certification system for high-performance builders. It’s part of a larger initiative to educate and mentor the next generation of building professionals.

You’ll gain an introduction to the scientific laws governing heat, water, and air movement within buildings. The course then applies these concepts to the assessment, design, and execution of modern high-performance building and renovation practices. Expect hands-on experience with modern building assessment tools and an understanding of control layers on architectural drawings.

Here’s a breakdown of the course units:

  • Unit 1: Science – Where’s the water coming from, where’s the heat going?

    • This unit introduces you to the fundamental scientific principles of heat, air, and moisture movement. You’ll explore how these principles relate to the durability and efficiency of high-performance building components. Hands-on introductions to tools like blower doors, manometers, IR cameras, hygrometers, and moisture meters are included.
    • Key Topics: Definitions of Building Science and High-Performance Building, Damage Factors (UV, Heat, Water), Physics of Heat Transfer, Moisture Transfer, Hygrothermal Dynamics, Air Movement, and Building Assessment Tools & Terminology.”‘

    • Building on Unit 1, this unit brings the science into the context of design and execution practices for both traditional and modern high-performance building. You’ll learn about the building as a whole system, integrated design principles, and the identification and compatibility of control layers.
